Yangon International Airport

The main airport in the country is at the north end of the city.

This is Mingaladon, the domestic terminal is at the north half and and international at the south. The later is much better than the north side which actually still smells like the very old time the second is in Mandalay.

Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is the most famous in the country. Every day pilgrim come from everywhere in the country and other countries to pay respect  or are just curious what's up here and get a real surprise since this is huge, read more.

Yangon IATA code is RGN the place is located about 16 km north of the city center, Myanmar has two international Airports, the other is in Mandalay which receives flights from Bangkok, most international passengers come via Thailand, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to Yangon.

Arrival is usually not with problems although immigration is not very organized since they always have empty immigration counter which means long waiting lines when 2 aircraft come at the time read more

Departure usually also wont give unpleasant stuff. just one thing. them buying and souvenir downtown make sure to get a official receipt. Don't underestimate this. it's an issue of taxation where you the tourist is not the only target, read more

Duty Free Shopping is quite OK. although this is not one of this big consumer temples such as Bangkok  and Singapore, if you want to get something buy it here. There prices in Myanmar are much lower. Especially at Suvarnabhumi they try very hard to empty your wallet, read more

Custom & Immigration if you bought any souvenir keep your receipt ready since they are very much after if the tax has been paid and the only way to find that out is an official receipt. If there is any dispute keep cool the people try to help to solve the situation they don't want anything negative, read more.

Arrival at Mingaladon

The local hub got an incredible boost in 2014 with almost 10 small airlines around, before there were four but all is low scale and small which also has to do that the small runways elsewhere in the country cant handle bigger aircraft, only up to the small Fokker and ATR. Those actually are the real back bone of Myanmar's air travel.

Mandalay Airport Arrival

To and from the Airport, Taxis.

There is no public transport anywhere around the place means either take a limousine, about $ 15,-, take a regular taxi parked just outside the arrival hall, around $ 10,-, or take one of the guys who run after you when you exit and offer a ride. If you only have small luggage an alternative would be to walk out from the building down to the main road and take a taxi there, cars are more or less the same but you can bargain it down to around $ 5.- since the guy carried some passengers in and is now interested to find someone back.

welcome to Myanmar (Burma) to the left is arrival immigration

Make sure to have written down the address of your hotel somewhere since many don't know most hotels unless it is a big one.

Change Money

Don't change money there since the exchange rate is not good. You can do it on the way to town just tell the driver to stop at a changer somewhere on the road, there are plenty now.

Domestic flights are operated in the old terminal about 100 m to the north. The new one is pictured here, in operation since May 2007 and does international flights only. Capacity is for about 2.7 million passengers a year. Over five domestic airlines and about 20 international airlines operate from here.

Departure from Myanmar

Almost everyone come and go via Yangon Airport.

This was the standard procedure since the 195x and the military kept it that way although they already had a internet data link from every border crossing since about 2011 to the HQ in the then capital it just went on. It even took until 2014 to start some attempts to handle the whole from the land crossings. The main reason was that the center, the embassies and consulates couldn't find  a way to share the income.

Similar to other countries the embassies and consulates exists from the income of the visa fee only and they couldn't work out share of the money, the result? no visa at the border.

Bangkok Airport Thailand

Most traveler go and come through Bangkok Airport, Although BKK is a whole dimension bigger and has a great spectacular architecture this rather small Myanmar Airport functions well without any problems. They are currently (2015) talking about building a new one about hundred km to the east near Bago. It's on hold now after some corruption allegations came up, lets see what happen, read more.

Kuala Lumpur Airport Arrivals

Some passengers come from Kuala Lumpur, which was enlarged recently with a new low cost terminal since that's the base of Air Asia. It's amazing how air traffic is increasing in the region, read more

    1. The airport is quite efficient they should just put enough people at the immigration counter, the other day only half of the counters were open and immediately arriving passengers where lined up. They really shouldn't copy all nonsense they see in Bangkok.
