Bago

This is the old Pegu in Mon State.

Before the 15th century most foreigners who came in by ship to Burma landed here and traded all treasures the country has including rubies and other gemstones. At that time this was definitely not holiday travel. The division is right east of Yangon and has a 39,400 km2 size and about 5 million people, it is home of several ethnic minorities but mainly Mon.

How to get there:

By bus to Bago
Using the train
Hire car and driver

Take a taxi from Yangon for avout 40 $, the bus or train, since it's only about 110 km. If you want to have a closer look around try to rent a motorbike, but be extremely careful they are not good prepared for accidents and since the whole infrastructure is real rotten it happens.

Bago has some interesting pagodas among them is the Shwemawdaw which is taller than the Shwedagon with a pretty precinct. Some market are around for colorful shots. The city was once at the seaside but the Bago River river brought in large amounts of silt etc. which had the town shifted inwards over the century.

Interesting places to visit in Bago, is the Shwemawdaw Pagoda.
