Chin & Naga Tribe

An exotic environment and adventurous aura.

They extend into India and live on both site of the border. The British, during colonial times, brought some Christian missionaries in to rub a wedge between them and the Buddhists.

Chin state is in northwest of Myanmar (latitude 20.40 to 5, longitude 92.37 to 94.9), a very rough part of the country. To the east it borders to Sagaing & Magwae Division to the west is Mizoram in Bangladesh and to the north Assam in India and south is Rakhine (Arakan).
Population is approx. 500,000 and they spread over about 336.000 sqkm. The highest peak is Mt. Victoria with 3,109m, people (mainly Chinese) are doing a bad job with illegal logging. There is plenty of water flowing through one of the streams is the Kaladan River which empty into the Bay of Bengal.

The Chin inhabits the mountainous region that borders India and Bangladesh.

They are of Tibeto-Burman ethnicity and the women have a very interesting fashion style using textiles they have woven with intricate geometric patterns. They also do heavy tattooing covering the whole face somehow resembling a spider’s web. This is done to girls once they reached about 10 or 12 years old. They tell it is to make sure the guys leave the girls alone.

Today this is only common tradition in south Chin state in particular with the Munn tribe in the Mt. Victoria region. The different tribes use variants of tattoo design such as Munn make small circles along the neck and others use plenty of dots all over the face. Another tribe uses a spider-net pattern design.
