Monasteries

The country has the highest count of Buddhist refuges.


They all are dedicated to Buddhism and monasteries have a few social functions. First as a home for the monks and novices further as orphanage, school and attached are often rest homes. The social system through the state is not strong, actually is not existent so the monks help. 

Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is the most famous in the country. Every day pilgrim come from everywhere in the country and other countries to pay respect  or are just curious what's up here and get a real surprise since this is huge, read more.

That is one of the reason why they have such a strong standing in society because they are the places people can go when they need help, the state is useless since doing nothing only making people miserable. They throw out millions of dollars to build a new capital but have no money to built and equip a hospital.

Some monasteries in Mandalay.

The Shwe In Bin which was built in 1815.  This is a showcase of teak wood-carving art  and was founded by a rich Chinese merchant who wanted to gain merit for his next life. it is west of the Thakawun monastery near 35th Street and definitely a highlight of the city.
